Upgrade to LED lighting

Intelligent lighting control is a great start for building a smart home or smart buildings.  The Internet of Things (IoT) will eventually pave the way for smart cities. Advanced devices such as IoT Energy’s Smart products and Smart solutions will always be components of a smart infrastructure, therefore an upgrade to an LED lighting system is a necessary first step.

Why Upgrade to LED Lighting?

Falling LED prices are driving up adoption rates of LED lamps, which in turn will increase the use of lighting controls. Since they are semiconductor systems LEDs are  inherently controllable, with excellent disability, easy integration of advanced-controls with drivers, and instantaneous setup. In fact, many LED lamps are sold with built-in controllability, whether or not there are plans to make use of the control.

Each new LED fixture can, in essence, become the node on an intelligent controls network. These networks are perfect for turning off the lights when people aren’t around or dimming them when it’s bright, saving electricity. But those sensors are also harvesting other useful data about temperature, occupancy and their surroundings that have all sorts of other applications.

Consider, for example, a smart LED lighting retrofit on a city street. Aside from the benefits that the municipal government could receive from lower electricity consumption and reduced maintenance expenses, that network could also support new revenue-generating services such as smart parking, by being able to sense which spots are open and sending that information to a mobile app in real time. Add some cameras, and your town can issue parking tickets more efficiently.

In a commercial building LED lighting networks can help with security applications, letting people know when someone has entered a room, or they could help with simple administrative functions such as managing conference room attendance or keeping track of which department uses certain areas and resources.

LED Lighting and Energy

There is a need to replace the older High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) light fixtures with LED lamps which provide an immediate energy savings of 50 to 60% and brighter, whiter light from the LEDs as compared to the yellow hues from HPS that distort colors. Sounds good? Well, consider that adding intelligent controls to the LED fixtures can further reduce energy consumption by 25% to 30% bringing a total energy savings of a whopping  80% and can represent a better ROI.

Based on studies, the wireless lighting controls allow the street lights to set at 70% of their maximum output (100% would be too bright), which means an immediate savings of 30% right off the top. The lights further dimmed to 35% of their output in the late evening. The savings are substantial: the new ‘Smart Lighting’ uses 75% less energy than the old HPS fixtures for an estimated energy savings of $500K per year!

However, a word of caution, a significant portion of the cost of replacing LED lights is the labor: many clients find it most cost effective to install controls when making the upgrade to LEDs rather than having to go back and do it over at greater cost.
